Packing Information

General Packing Guidelines

Packing for an international USAthlete Tour isn’t just about gear—it’s about traveling smart. These guidelines help athletes and family members pack efficiently, avoid airline issues, and stay prepared for every part of the journey. From climate considerations and clothing expectations to sport-specific equipment and thoughtful extras, this checklist ensures you’re ready for the experience ahead—on the field and across the world.

Please read these instructions carefully. All USAthlete Tours travelers are permitted one checked bag, one non-expandable carry-on (if needed), and one personal item such as a backpack or purse. While it’s important to be prepared, traveling light is strongly encouraged to support smooth group travel.

Always check your airline’s website for the most current baggage regulations. Most international flights allow checked bags up to 62 linear inches (L + W + H) and 50 lbs. Exceeding these limits may result in fees of $60 or more each way. Be mindful of size and weight to avoid unexpected charges.

For athletes, the checked bag will typically be a sport or equipment bag. These bags often have room for personal items in addition to competition gear. Many athletes are able to travel with just their equipment bag and a backpack. A carry-on roller is optional but must not be oversized or expandable.

If you choose to bring a carry-on, it should weigh under 22 lbs and measure no more than 21.5" H × 15.5" W × 9.5" D. Avoid large or expandable rollers. Personal items such as small backpacks should remain compact and generally not exceed 10" × 13" × 8".

European Union liquid regulations apply to carry-on bags. Liquids must be placed in a sealable, transparent plastic bag. Refer to your airline’s website for the most up-to-date information on permitted items.

Check the weather forecast for your destination, including expected highs, lows, and possible changes. Elevation, coastal conditions, and seasonal shifts can affect temperatures. A lightweight, water-resistant windbreaker is recommended for rain or wind.

Dress comfortably but appropriately—you are representing your team, organization, and country. Casual clothing such as jeans and T-shirts is acceptable, but avoid ripped items or clothing with inappropriate language or imagery. Plan to re-wear select items and consider packing a small bottle of laundry soap for mid-tour washing. Outerwear should fully cover undergarments.

Athletes should plan space in their luggage for USAthlete Tours–provided apparel, which may be distributed prior to departure or during the tour. This additional gear can add several pounds, so pack accordingly.

Bringing a small gift for international athletes is encouraged. USA sports apparel, shirts, shorts, stickers, or similar items are popular options. Used items in good condition are acceptable, and some athletes enjoy trading gear.

Athletes are responsible for bringing all equipment necessary to compete. Replacement items may be difficult or unavailable abroad. Only approved, standard equipment is permitted, and all gear should meet safety guidelines.

Due to the volume of team equipment and luggage, motor coach space is limited. Athletes and families are strongly encouraged to pack compactly and efficiently to help keep daily travel smooth and organized.

For families traveling together or with an athlete, one checked bag and one or two carry-ons per family is preferred. Please avoid bringing multiple large bags when possible. Thank you for helping streamline the travel experience for the entire group.

General Packing Checklist

Packing for an international USAthlete Tour takes more than tossing gear into a bag—it takes intention. This checklist is designed to help athletes and families pack exactly what’s needed and avoid unnecessary extras. From competition gear and travel-day clothing to carry-on essentials and smart add-ons, it keeps athletes organized and families confident. Pack light, travel prepared, and focus on what matters most—competition, connection, and the experience ahead.

Pack smart and travel light. Do not bring more than these three items—and most athletes can manage with two.

One large sport bag or checked suitcase (must meet airline size and weight requirements), one carry-on or roller bag (standard carry-on dimensions), and one small backpack or personal item for essentials and valuables.

Use your sport bag or checked luggage for the bulk of your gear and clothing.

Required athletic gear for your sport, 1–2 pairs of casual pants or jeans (consider wearing one pair on travel days), 2–3 T-shirts, athletic socks, toiletries, 1–2 long-sleeve tops or light layers, USAthlete Tours–provided apparel, and athletic shoes or casual shoes (opposite of what you wear on the plane).

Bring only what you need for competition and training. Coaches will communicate any sport-specific requirements in advance.

Required protective or performance equipment, game or practice uniform items, cleats or sport-specific footwear (extra laces if applicable), multiple pairs of athletic socks, compression gear or undershirts, small personal training items (if approved), and an empty reusable water bottle.

Note: Any shared or specialty equipment will be coordinated by USAthlete Tours and coaching staff.

Your carry-on should include essentials in case of delays and anything you can’t risk being separated from.

Undergarments, sleepwear, non-athletic socks, one change of clothes, and personal items/valuables.

A few small items can make travel smoother—especially on longer tours.

Prescription medications (in original containers), contact lenses or glasses (keep backups in your carry-on), basic toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, razor, etc.), phone and/or camera, and a small container of laundry detergent for mid-tour washing.
